News From BBC Tees Valley Proms in the Park….

Tees Valley Youth Choir – runners up in the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition – is to entertain the audience at the NS&I sponsored BBC Proms in the Park Tees Valley as they arrive to enjoy the party atmosphere in the run up to the main event on September 8. TVYC is the foremost youth choir in the North of England and widely regarded as one of the finest in Great Britain . Established in 1993 by John Forsyth, who continues as its musical director, the choir comprises 70 of the region’s top young singers aged from 14-19 years.

Such is their reputation that they are regularly invited to appear in concerts throughout Europe, but they are equally excited about being given the opportunity to sing for the first time at the event in Middlesbrough ’s new Centre Square .

Choir director John Forsyth said: “The choir was delighted to hear that the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park event was coming to the Tees Valley and we were all looking forward to going as spectators - so to have been asked to take part is the icing on the cake!”

TVYC will be singing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody at the BBC Proms in the Park event.  Their performance follows a hectic summer schedule, which includes the choir’s 13th European concert tour - with appearances at the Madeleine church in Paris, Chartres Cathedral and venues in the Loire Valley - as well as participating in the National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham and the Brinkburn Festival in July.  They reconvene at the end of August to start intensive rehearsals for their Queen rendition on September 8 as well as a performance of Mozart’s Requiem the following evening at Stockton Parish Church.

John Forsyth added: “Our success in the Choir of the Year competition has made this our busiest year yet. We’ve performed at 29 concerts! The choir members are a great bunch of young people and I’m proud of every single one of them and the region should be too.”

Middlesbrough Councillor David Budd, Executive Member for Regeneration said:

“The Tees Valley Youth Choir flies the flag for the Tees Valley and the North East generally.  The BBC Tees Valley Proms in the Park provides the ideal opportunity to showcase such fantastic regional talent and the diverse range of exceptional abilities we have on our doorstep.

“The event promises something for everyone who appreciates musical excellence - from the moment the gates open to the grand Last Night of the Proms finale being broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall onto the big screen.”

BBC Proms in the Park Tees Valley takes place in Centre Square Middlesbrough on Saturday 8 September.  Tickets costs £10 for adults; £8 for concessions (over 60s, under 18s); under 12s are free when accompanied by an adult and are available from the Box Office on 01642 729729 or via bbc.co.uk/proms.

Music for the concert will be provided by Northern Sinfonia - recently named by the Times newspaper as one of the UK’s top three orchestras - conducted by Michal Dworzynski.

BBC Proms in the Park in the Tees Valley forms part of North East England’s world-class programme of festivals and events for 2007.
